★★★★★ "I bought this app for my 5 year old who is so excited to show everyone the letters she is writing using this app. It is priceless to see her pride and confidence [...] Thanks for a great app."

Designed by parents, for preschoolers aged 2-5 years.

LetterTracer is an educational tool that helps preschoolers and other pre-reading children trace and paint letter and number shapes. Early exposure to letters and numbers helps prepare children for reading and writing in grade school. LetterTracers three-way combination of visual letters, interactivity via tracing, and a spoken voice-over helps children learn and retain the alphabet.

Designed by parents, LetterTracer is generally appropriate for children ages 2 to 5, and was intensively field-tested by our own children! Uppercase and lowercase letters A to Z and the numbers 0 through 9 are shown in three selectable styles:

✔ Flashcard mode: each letter is shown in its regular, filled-in black-on-white rendition. Use this mode as you would flash cards, to practice recognizing letters and numbers with your child.

✔ Tracing mode, for younger children: a hollow outline of each letter is shown. Your child can finger-paint on the screen to trace the letterform.

✔ Freeform mode, for older children: a smaller image of each letter is shown in the upper-left corner; the rest of the screen is available for freehand drawing of the letterform.

Choose from three difference voices; each calls out the name of letters as they appear, to reinforce your childs learning:

✔ Adult Male
✔ Adult Female
✔ Child

LetterTracer is easy and fun to use for both parents and kids:

✔ In flash card mode, "swipe" back and forth to move between letters easily

✔ When drawing, shake your iPhone or iPod Touch to clear the screen and start over. Kids love this feature!

✔ Choose a larger, more forgiving brush size for younger children, or a smaller, more precise brush size for older children

✔ Choose from 10 painting colors

✔ Choose from three different voices to call out letters and numbers

Tactile practice with letters is an excellent complement to "passive education" from television. LetterTracer is appropriate for roughly the same audience as pre-reading and early-reading skills shows such as Super Why, Sesame Street, Blues Clues, WordGirl, Between the Lions and WordWorld.

LetterTracer is excellent ABC practice for native English speakers, but is also appropriate for introducing the English alphabet to ESL students.

Pros and cons of Letter Tracer preschool letters writing practice app for iPhone and iPad

Letter Tracer preschool letters writing practice app good for

Love this app. My son traces chalk drawings in the driveway. This is much more portable without the mess. Wish there was some acknowledgement of good job, well done, or the like when the letter is traced correctly or freehand. Needs more interaction with the child, more instruction. Draw a straight line, now a curve , etc.
My kids love using this app. It is simple enough for them to figure out on thier own. The voice over is the perfect addition for my 3 year old.
Perfect for my 3 year old. Love the options for upper or lowercase or numbers. Love the color changability. Its great.
This is agreat app for my son to learn the letters by sound and how to draw them....Need a french version as my son is bilingual
Great app, my son loves it. I would really like the addition of the sound the letter makes, not just its name (phonetics). That would make this app an awesome learning tool.
My 3 year old loves to play this, and he learned quickly how to change all of the options. His favorite app by far!

Some bad moments

Surely if you are teaching a child to count to 10 then after "9" the next number should be "10" not "0". This should be fixed. Nobody teaches their kid to count from one to nine before starting again at zero!
I downloaded this for my granddaughter she loved it now I cant get the tracer back and she is upset. WTH?
This is fine for a very simple app, but there isnt any feedback on how well my kid does his letters, so I have to look at each one and say "good job buddy!" Some kind of positive reinforcement when he stays in the lines would be great.
Has anyone else had trouble getting the sound? It worked until the most recent update and now it no longer identifies the letters, which makes this pretty useless. Also, I agree with other reviewers about the starting point dots and proper formation of /4/ and /t/.
This app has a good idea but doesnt follow. I bought this app for my 3 y.o. son whom I wanted to help learn his ABCs. He uses the trace mode to color or simply fill in the letters. If you were to teach how to write or trace the letters correctly (perhaps by putting arrows to show the direction to trace), that would automatically make this app a 4 or even 5 star app and one that I would proudly recommend to others. Look at the Kanji app for Japanese characters and youll see an excellent tool for tracing and learning the proper way.
I wish that when you are finished tracing the letter the app would recognize and repeat letter to reinforce the letter
